Delayed elections could lead to crisis, there is no threat of military rule so reforms cannot take forever
Dhaka, October 5, 2024 – In a recent session organized by Debate for Democracy, Motiur Rahman Chowdhury, the Chief Editor of Daily Manabzamin, emphasized the potential crisis that could arise if elections are delayed in Bangladesh. Speaking at the event titled" National elections After State Reforms Will Strengthen Democracy," held at the FDC in the capital, Chowdhury highlighted the urgency of electoral reforms and the need for timely elections.
Motiur Rahman expressed pride in having Dr. Yunus as the head of the interim government, acknowledging his global reputation. However, he stressed the necessity for a more stringent administration to implement reforms effectively. "Reforms cannot take forever. Delaying elections will plunge the country into a deep crisis. Therefore, there is no alternative to reforming the electoral system and holding elections promptly," he stated.
The event, chaired by Hassan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron, Chairman of Debate for Democracy, saw the participation of debaters from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University and Kabi Nazrul Government College, with the latter emerging victorious. The winning team was awarded trophies, crests, and certificates. And judge was Dr. SM Morshed, Prof Shirina Beethi, journalist Russell Ahmed, journalist Md. Humayun Kabir and journalist Amena Hira. Additionally, Motiur Rahman Chowdhury was honored for his courageous, honest and objective journalism throughout his career.
Motiur rahman also addressed concerns about re-writing the constitution, suggesting that reforms are possible but rewriting could lead to complications. He dismissed fears of military rule, stating that in the current
era, military governance is not feasible and would lead to the cessation of support from international development partners. "If the revolution fails, Bangladesh will fail, and we will face an existential crisis," he warned.
In his concluding remarks, Hassan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron highlighted the need for a reasonable timeframe for the interim government to organize national elections. He argued that holding elections within a year and a half might not bring significant changes to the existing system. "The interim government should be given a logical timeframe to organize national elections. Otherwise, the government will not achieve the desired goals mandated by the people," he said. He also emphasized the importance of announcing an electoral roadmap and transferring power to an elected government as soon as possible.
